Naturalization Test

The Naturalization Test

Preparing for Your Citizenship Interview

To obtain U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process, you will need to demonstrate your knowledge of U.S. civics and your proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English during your citizenship interview.

During their interviews, applicants sometimes get confused by the questions. At Charleston USA Immigration Law Center, LLP, we are more than happy to attend citizenship interviews with our clients. Many times, we have provided crucial clarifications that made the difference between passing and failing the test. While some examiners want attorneys to not take any notes or give aid to their clients, others welcome our assistance. Overall, we enjoy a very good rapport with the examiners because we only present cases that we have carefully prescreened and prepared.

The Civics Portion

Although USCIS provides a multiple-choice practice test for the civics exam, the actual test will be verbal. During your naturalization interview, the officer will choose from a list of 100 questions and ask you 10 of them in English. You will need to answer 6 of these correctly. You may be exempt from these requirements only under certain conditions.

We always tell our clients to start memorizing these answers and testing themselves when the application is first filed, long before the interview date. You can find the entire list of possible questions and answers here.

The English Portion

The English portion of the citizenship test is fairly straightforward. For the reading portion, you must correctly read 1 of 3 sentences, and for the writing portion, you must correctly write 1 of 3 sentences. The officer will assess your speaking proficiency during the course of your interview.
