Naturalization Test

About the Test for Citizenship

To obtain U.S. citizenship through the naturalization process requires an application, an interview and a test on one's knowledge of U.S. civics, ability to speak English and understand, read and write English.

For the reading portion of the test, you must correctly read 1 of 3 sentences to demonstrate an ability to read English. The speaking and understanding portions will be reviewed by your answers to the interviewing officer questions during the interview. The civics portion will be determined by your getting 6 of 10 verbal questions correct, out of a list of 100 about American history and government. Sample questions are available as a study guide. We always tell our clients to start memorizing these answers and to start testing themselves when the application is first filed, long before the interview date.

Often applicants get confused and we recommend attending our clients' interviews. Many times we have assisted in clarification and the providing of lost or misplaced documents. Some examiners welcome our assistance, while others want the attorney to not take any notes nor give any aid. Overall, we enjoy a very good rapport with the examiners because we only present cases that we have carefully prescreened and thoroughly prepared for their review. Remember, "with immigration nothing is as simple as it first appears"SM. Should the test be failed a retest is permitted between 60 and 90 days after the failure.

Upon passing, the process continues to the approval notice and a Naturalization Ceremony to be scheduled in the future.
